Plastics Recycling - understand the codes
| 1 | PET | Polyethylene terephthalate - Fizzy drink bottles and oven-ready meal trays. |
| 2 | HDPE | High-density polyethylene - Bottles for milk and washing-up liquids. |
| 3 | PVC | Polyvinyl chloride - Food trays, cling film, bottles for squash, mineral water and shampoo |
| 4 | LDPE | Low density polyethylene - Carrier bags and bin liners |
| 5 | PP | Polypropylene - Margarine tubs, microwaveable meal trays |
| 6 | PS | Polystyrene - Yoghurt pots, foam meat or fish trays, hamburger boxes and egg cartons, vending cups, plastic cutlery, protective packaging for electronic goods and toys |
| 7 | OTHER | Any other plastics that do not fall into any of the above categories. - An example is melamine, which is often used in plastic plates and cups. |
Home collection black boxes do not accept ANY plastics for recycling. This is as a result of previous studies deeming the collection of plastics on existing black box vehicles to be impractical because of the large volume of plastics and so the space they take up. But new pilot studies for doorstep plastics collection will be undertaken in 2011 in some areas. (Most likely not ours at this point).
The plastic banks in Bristol currently take ALL plastic bottles including PET, HDPE, PP and PS. BOTTLE TOPS ARE ALSO ACCEPTED IN THE BANKS.
At the moment the plastic banks will ONLY accept bottles, NOT any
other plastic. Therefore, non-bottle plastics MUST NOT be placed in
these banks at the present time. However, from late April, the range of
materials these banks can take will extend to other plastic packaging.
Meanwhile the two Household Waste Recycling Centres do have additional
plastic bins for "hard and rigid plastics".
